Abbatial election
Our father immediate and another monk arrived from Gethsemani for our abbatial election tomorrow. Our abbot's term of 6 years has been completed, so all the solemnly professed monks (I, in temporary vows, am not included) will meet to elect the abbot. The head of the election is the father immediate of the community -- in this case, the abbot of Gethsemani.

can your current abbot be re-elected for another term or is it one and done, term limits??
ReplyDeleteHe can be re-elected -- and most likely will be. Years ago, abbots were for life; then, in the 1970s and 1980s, limited terms were explored. Our monastery was the first in the order to elect an abbot for a limited term. Now it is common for abbots to serve 6-year terms and then stand for re-election.
